Biography
Katherine’s work is inspired by landscape and adventures that connect us with the wild and rugged places from mountains, hills, to moorland, water, and sea. Her handmade prints often use linocut, but also woodcut and collagraph techniques. Colours are layered, shapes and features of the landscape cut into the printing plate and are transferred to paper to show the character and contour of rock, water, and land. Thinking like a painter when mixing and layering of colour and bringing out the light and tonal qualities in the image, she brings a painting-like quality to the prints she makes. The rocks and edges of the Peak District and are portrayed with her linocut prints cutting the shapes of the blocks of stone out from the lino plate, layering colours to show the features and characterisations on the rock. Through walking and outdoor adventures and regular contact with climbers and mountaineers, she has developed a fascination with the journey, the path and routes climbed on the rock. Shapes and character of land and rock are shown accurately, showing crevices, rock face, or landscape that a climber, mountaineer, or walker would know so well. Colour and form remain central to her prints, founded in a painterly approach to colour mixing, layering and mark making, they can sometimes appear more like a painting than a print. She still enjoys and makes paintings alongside her printmaking practice. Katherine exhibits widely in South Yorkshire, Derbyshire and further afield in the UK, and has been fortunate to have been awarded prizes in some selected exhibitions. She opens her studio annually as part of Open Up Sheffield and she welcomes arranged visits and enquiries about her work. You can see more of her work on her website
