Biography

I am a ceramic designer. My ceramic practice is driven by my expressive drawings, with the abstract marks influenced by abandoned spaces and graffitied walls. I look at the natural and urban landscape and how organic matter and rusted metal are juxtaposed.

The bold strokes of paint and scratched markings relate to my own two-dimensional mark making and the energetic abstract painting that I have developed. The marks and lines that are produced become gestural as I use the surface as a vehicle for my drawing.

By combining industrial methods of batch production through slip casting, with expressive surface pattern I create one off earthenware and porcelain vessels. These slip cast pieces are simple in form which allows for the bold application of decoration using slips, splashes of glaze and enamel. I continuously layer different marks between three or four firings until the desired result is achieved.
